An Early Screener for Reading Readiness

The SORR is a comprehensive and time efficient screening instrument designed to assess reading readiness skills in children ages 4-6.

The SORR assesses reading readiness across 7 subtests and includes 1 supplemental subtest:

  • Identifying Sounds – assesses the child's ability to identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words with visual cues.
  • Blending of Sounds– assesses the child's ability to identify the whole word that is spoken one phoneme at a time. Meaures auditory synthesis.

Auditory Memory

  • Verbal List Learning – assesses the child's ability to recall a verbally presented list of words over repeated trials. Measures verbal intermediate memory and has a delayed recall component as well. Intrusion errors (words recalled that were not part of the presented list) are recorded as a qualitative behavior.
  • Memory for Sentences – assesses verbal intermediate memory. The child is asked to recall a verbally presented sentence.

Verbal Fluency

  • Rapid Picture Naming - assesses the child's verbal fluency. The child is asked to name a series of pictures as quickly as possible.
