KDI-2 Test Facts
Origins of the test:
- The original KDI was developed by Robinson in 1976.
- The KDI was re-formatted and re-standardized by Robinson and Miller in 1986.
- The Second Edition of the KDI (KDI-2) was re-formatted, re-designed, and re-standardized in 2000.
What is the age range for the test?
- The KDI-2 is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6.
- The test may be administered at the end of the preschool year through the end of the kindergarten year.
How long does the KDI-2 take to administer?
- It takes approximately 35 minutes to administer all 13 subtests of the KDI-2 to an individual child.
How is the KDI-2 typically administered?
- The KDI-2 is typically administered by a kindergarten screening team where the child rotates from station to station to completethe tests.
- The KDI-2 may also be individually administered by a trained examiner (e.g., school psychologist, educational diagnostician, speech therapist, etc.) to evaluate an individual child's development readiness skills as part of a comprehensive individual evaluation.
How is the KDI-2 Scored?
- The KDI-2 may be scored using the standardization sample norms, but it is scored best using local or national norms calculated by the KDI-2 Scoring and Interpretation Program for Windows™.
Is the KDI-2 a diagnostic or prescriptive test?
- The KDI-2 can best be described as a diagnostic and prescriptive assessment tool.
- The KDI-2 is diagnostic because it is a good predictor of future academic learning.
- The KDI-2 is also a good screener for potential developmentally children and potentially gifted children on either end of the developmental readiness continuum.
- The KDI-2 may be used prescriptively to identify a child's strengths and weaknesses across the 13 developmental readiness tests and link interventions to the child's educational needs.
- The KDI-2 should be used in conjunction with some prescriptive linkage such as the activities in My Kindergarten Fun Book-2.
