 Screening of Reading Readiness

An Early Screener for Reading Readiness

The SORR is a comprehensive and time efficient screening instrument designed to assess reading readiness skills in children ages 4-6.

The SORR assesses reading readiness across 7 subtests and includes 1 supplemental subtest:

Phonemic Awareness

  • Rhyming Words in Context – assesses the child's listening comprehension skills and known of contextual rhymes. The child hears a sentence and is asked to complete the sentence with a rhyme (e.g., See you later _______ [alligator]}.
  • Rhyming Words in Isolation – assesses the child's knowledge of phonological skills using rhymes. The child hears two words that rhyme and is asked to say another word that rhymes or sounds like the other two words (e.g., hat...bat...? [sat]).
  • Identifying Sounds – assesses the child's ability to identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words with visual cues.
  • Blending of Sounds– assesses the child's ability to identify the whole word that is spoken one phoneme at a time. Meaures auditory synthesis.

Auditory Memory

  • Verbal List Learning – assesses the child's ability to recall a verbally presented list of words over repeated trials. Measures verbal intermediate memory and has a delayed recall component as well. Intrusion errors (words recalled that were not part of the presented list) are recorded as a qualitative behavior.
  • Memory for Sentences – assesses verbal intermediate memory. The child is asked to recall a verbally presented sentence.

Verbal Fluency

  • Rapid Picture Naming - assesses the child's verbal fluency. The child is asked to name a series of pictures as quickly as possible.

Print and Book Awareness (Supplemental)

  • Print and Book Awareness - assesses the child's skills related to print and book awareness. For example, does the child know how to identify a page, a word, the cover of a book, etc.

SORR Test Facts

Origins of the test:

  • The initial interest in developing the SORR came during the restandardization of the Kindergarten Diagnostic Instrument-Second Edition (KDI-2) in 2000. The Phonemic Awareness subtest on the KDI-2 was the first attempt at including a predictive reading measure on one of our products.
  • Miller and Budge began working on the pilot version of the SORR in 2001.

What is the age range for the test?

  • The SORR is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6.
  • The test may be administered during the preschool, kindergarten, and first grade school years.
  • The test may be selectively administered to children who are older than age 6 and have known or suspected reading difficulties.

How long does the SORR take to administer?

  • It takes approximately 25 minutes to administer all 7 subtests of the SORR to an individual child.

How is the SORR typically administered?

  • The SORR is typically administered by a screening team where the child rotates from station to station to complete the tests.
  • The SORR may also be individually administered by a trained examiner (e.g., reading teacher, school psychologist, educational diagnostician, speech therapist, etc.) to evaluate an individual child's reading readiness skills as part of a comprehensive individual evaluation.

How is the SORR Scored?

  • The SORR may be scored using the standardization sample norms contained in the SORR Administration Manual.
